Central American Agouti in Costa Rica
Dasyprocta punctata
Agoutis · ~50 cm · all
CaribbeanPacificOsaCentral Valley
Large rust-brown rodent of the forest floor. Slender legs, short tail, alert posture. Often the most-seen mammal in CR forests — readily walks paths and clearings.
Fun Facts
- ▸Sole disperser of the giant Brazil-nut family seeds — without agoutis, those trees can't reproduce.
- ▸Caches seeds it doesn't eat, effectively planting new forest as it forgets caches.
- ▸Mates for life — pairs share territory and raise young together.
